History & Mission
Family Service League traces its roots to the Children's Home Association, founded by Rev. Amory H. Bradford in Montclair in 1881. Many of Montclair's early civic leaders provided support and guidance to the organization in its early years, including Jasper Rand, Rachel Van Vleck, George Mills and Julia Inness. Originally established as a child welfare agency, the programs and scope of the organization expanded over the decades, both in response to increased awareness of the needs of families and children, and as a result of the social work movement of the early twentieth century. Over the course of the last 125 years, Family Service League merged with several Essex County agencies, including Family Service of West Essex, Family & Children's Services of North Essex and the Family Service of Bloomfield & Glen Ridge.
The mission of Family Service League is to support and strengthen families in need in Essex County through counseling, education and social services. The agency's success stems from the dedication of an experienced, highly trained staff of professionals who care deeply about families. Our programs are focused on low-income families and individuals who cannot afford counseling or other services. Nearly 95% of our clients receive services at reduced rates -- often at a small fraction of our fee -- or at no cost, including survivors of sexual assault who are seen for free.
Family Service League has developed and refined a specific, time-tested approach to family counseling that yields tangible results. Family Counseling is now at the heart of a rich constellation of programs for individuals, couples, families and children. Today, Family Service League continues the work of our founders through outstanding services that transform the lives of families and individuals in nearly fifty New Jersey communities, including every town in Essex County.
